Choosing fabric for custom golf polos starts with the wearing conditions and the intended fit. Fibre names alone cannot establish breathability, drying behaviour or comfort. Compare physical swatches and finished samples against the same requirements before committing to a bulk fabric.
Define the golf programme before selecting a fabric
Record whether the shirt is intended for warm-weather play, club uniforms, travel or everyday use. Specify the desired surface, coverage, stretch and care expectations. A close-fitting performance polo and a relaxed clubhouse polo may need different drape and construction even when their colour palette is identical.
Ask for fibre percentages, knit construction, GSM, usable width, finish and available colour options. Identify whether a swatch represents stock material or a custom development, since availability and purchasing conditions can differ.
Compare swatches under consistent conditions
- Surface: does the buyer want a textured piqué appearance or a smoother face?
- Body: does the material hold the intended silhouette without feeling too stiff?
- Stretch and recovery: does it move comfortably and return after extension?
- Coverage: does a light colour remain acceptable under tension and strong light?
- Care: what happens to dimensions, surface and colour after the proposed wash process?
Review comparable swatches in the same light and at similar weights when possible. A heavier swatch may appear more opaque simply because of its weight; that does not isolate the effect of fibre choice.
Check performance claims and decoration together
If your range will advertise drying, moisture management or UV performance, agree the evidence required for that particular claim. Ask which fabric or garment was tested, under which method and conditions, and whether washing was part of the assessment. A generic description such as “performance polyester” is not a test report.
Approve the collar, chest branding and any heat-applied details on the selected material. Embroidery can affect drape, while heat application can interact with dye or finish. Evaluate the complete shirt rather than assuming a good swatch guarantees a good polo.
Questions to close in the material brief
Is one composition best for every golf polo?
No. Consider the intended use, hand feel, construction, care and measurable requirements together.
Should the sample use the exact bulk fabric?
Confirm any sample substitution in writing and approve the final material before bulk production. A substitute may conceal differences in fit, colour or decoration.
Read the piqué versus jersey comparison and send your golf polo material brief with a reference silhouette.
