Recycled-content fabric should be evaluated as both a material and a documented claim. A swatch can help establish appearance and feel, but it cannot prove the origin or percentage of recycled content. Ask what the supplier can substantiate for the exact material proposed for your order.
Identify the actual material
Record fibre percentages, construction, weight, finish, supplier reference and intended garment use. Clarify which part of the blend is described as recycled. A statement about one fibre component should not be presented as if it described the entire garment, including trims and other materials.
Review suitability for fit, decoration and care separately. Recycled content does not by itself establish drying performance, durability or a particular surface quality.
Match documents to the claim and transaction
- Check the document issuer, holder and relevant material or activity.
- Review scope and dates rather than relying on a cropped logo or screenshot.
- Ask how the proposed material is connected to the documented supplier and purchase.
- Where a certification scheme is claimed, verify its current requirements and permitted claims with the scheme owner or qualified adviser.
- Identify what evidence will be supplied for the actual order, not only what was available for an earlier fabric.
A facility document and evidence for a particular material transaction answer different questions. Request clarification where the connection between the document and your order is missing.
Keep product copy within the evidence
Write the proposed claim before approving labels and marketing. State the material and percentage only where supported by the records. Avoid broad environmental comparisons or impact numbers unless the required evidence and assessment are available for that exact statement.
Maintain the approved material reference, supporting records and claim wording with the production specification. If the fabric source or blend changes, reopen the documentation and copy review before using the old statement.
Questions during sourcing
Does a recycled fabric certificate cover every style?
Check the relevant scope and connection to each material and order. Do not extend a document beyond what it actually establishes.
Can a replacement fabric keep the same label?
Only after the responsible team verifies that the new material supports the same wording and any applicable requirements.
Review available document information and the labelling brief. Submit your material and evidence requirements before sample approval.
