Piqué and jersey describe fabric constructions, not fibre compositions or guaranteed performance levels. For polo development, compare the actual swatches and finished samples. The useful question is which material creates your intended appearance and fit under the conditions the garment will face.
Separate construction, fibre and finish
Piqué used for polos generally has a textured face, while single jersey typically has a smoother face. Each can be offered in different fibre blends, weights and finishes. Ask the supplier to identify the full material rather than accepting a short name such as “cotton piqué” as the complete specification.
Record composition percentages, construction, GSM, usable width, finish and colour reference. If two swatches differ in weight and composition as well as construction, do not attribute every visible difference to piqué versus jersey alone.
Compare the appearance on a garment
- Surface: which texture fits the brand and intended level of formality?
- Drape: how does the fabric hang at the chest, hem and sleeve?
- Coverage: how does it look in light colours and under movement?
- Collar relationship: does it work with the proposed collar and placket?
- Decoration: is fine lettering or a textured logo clear at final size?
Use samples with similar fit when making the comparison. A different pattern can change the impression of body, softness or stretch independently of the material.
Check care behaviour and supply
Review dimensional change, surface and shape after the agreed care process. Document the conditions and the particular material evaluated. CottonWorks technical material explains that knit processing and structure affect dimensional behaviour; do not assume a construction name establishes a fixed shrinkage result.
Confirm colour availability and material purchasing conditions. When selecting a substitute, repeat the relevant sample checks because a visually similar fabric may alter fit, collar behaviour or decoration appearance.
Common polo material questions
Is piqué always more breathable?
Do not infer a specific performance result from the name. Compare the actual construction and use an appropriate evaluation if breathability is a product claim.
Can the same pattern be used for both?
It can be a development starting point, but review fit and care behaviour on each selected material before approval.
